There’s a time to run, and a time to pick up a gun. Especially in the City of Angels, where the police are at war with the Stay Ready Soldiers, a militant group based in South Central. Tonight, Geronimo and Kali must rely on each other as they traverse a perilous concrete wasteland, dodging bullets every step of the way.

Review:

Adrenaline junkies are in for a treat with this action-packed, fast-paced thriller.  Hosting a formidable cast, A Night in Babylon by Michael West is a force to be reckoned with.

Fans of vigilante heroes/warriors stories, packed with Smith & Wessons, Rugers & Winchesters, will revel in this compelling, gun-slinging escapade.  They’ll also root for the under-dogs in this intense adventure.  Alongside the action-galore, is a memorable cast that makes this a book you can’t put down.  Each person has a brief description.  However, it is the crisp conversations that really flesh them out so you know who they are.  Love the quick succinct repartee that reveals core traits, this is one of my favorites:  “Bullets for breakfast, but you won’t eat pork.”

It is set in Los Angeles, sometime in the not too distant future.  Earthquakes have devastated the city, and left behind a cesspool of corruption.  Fighting for freedom against tyranny (and the right to grow your own vegetables) are the Stay Ready Soldiers. These soldiers are the good guys, no doubts or blurring lines in this story, they’re fighting a president that is rotten.  Nefarious police are feared by all.  The innocent hide in trepidation, their only hope lies in the S.R.S. but the government has decided it’s time they were gone.  The whole book captures one night in hell, as the government engage high-tech mercenaries to eliminate each section of the group.  I really enjoyed how the main characters paths crossed, revealing the nights events from their point of view, pulling the story together, giving you a full 3-D glimpse into the gory night.

Michael West’s writing skills are to be envied.  The nighttime descriptions evoke atmosphere so well.  Clean, sharp, to the point, and yet with immersive conversations which unmask dynamic characters.  A Night in Babylon by Michael West is a gripping, thrilling, near-future ‘shoot ‘em up’ that comes highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews.
