Book Review

Let There Be Light: A Diwali Story is full of wonder, creative dialogue, and fun characters mixed with tradition. With descriptions of delicious Indian food and beautiful ceremonies, author Siva K.C. Penamakuru takes readers on a wonderful journey through ancient and enduring customs and imagination.

This is a story about pasumans, animal-like creatures that walk and talk just like humans do. The Pulis family (who resemble tigers) is running behind on their Diwali preparations. Their friends, the Gajas (who resemble elephants), visit, but the Pulis don’t know if they will be of much help. Things start turning out badly. Some pasumans even lose their temper. But eventually, they realize that everything doesn’t have to be perfect, and celebrating together is what’s important.

This is a unique children’s middle grade fiction holiday book that is a great introduction to Diwali, the biggest and most important national Indian holiday of the year. It also helps them to not get too caught up in the details but to appreciate holidays for what they are. The writing is superb, and the storyline is flawless. The animal-like characters are understandable and likable, and their story is unlike any that you’ve ever read. The images are superb. Both the illustration style and theme of the book would make an excellent animated TV show. After reading this, you’ll realize how special it is and will want to keep it close to your heart and memory.

You don’t want to miss LET THERE BE LIGHT – A Diwali Story. It’s a unique literary treasure more than worthy of being on any kid’s bookshelf and comes highly recommended by Artisan Books & Reviews for Kids. Book read & reviewed by Micah Giordonela for Artisan Book Reviews
