One? by Jennifer L Cahill

It’s London in the mid-noughties before Facebook, iPhones and ubiquitous wifi, and One? follows the highs and lows of a group of twenty-somethings living in leafy SW4.

Zara has just moved to London for her first real job and struggles to find her feet in a big city with no instruction manual.

Penelope works night and day in an investment bank with little or no time for love. At 28 she is positively ancient as far as her mother is concerned and the pressure is on for her to settle down as the big 3-0 is looming.

Charlie spends night and day with his band who are constantly teetering on the verge of greatness.

Richard has relocated to London from his castle in Scotland in search of the one, and Alyx is barely in one place long enough to hold down a relationship let alone think about the future.

Review:

One? by debut author Jennifer L Cahill is a fun, enjoyable read filled with wit, humor and interesting characters who are trying to navigate life, work, relationships and love.

Penelope and Charlie are set to move into an apartment together. They knew each other in college and have now reconnected as friends and decided to become roommates. Zara, is a rather timid young woman who has moved from a small Welsh town to London to work. When Penelope and Charlie arrive at their new apartment ready to move in, they find Zara there moving into the apartment as well. There is a big mistake on the landlord’s part and even though Penelope and Charlie don’t know Zara, they all decide to give it a shot and become roommates.

One? is a fabulous story. The three main characters each have their own life issues to deal with. Penelope is outgoing and savvy and helps the more quiet and anxious, Zara to settle in and navigate life in London. Zara eventually gets past her fears and makes her life in London enjoyable. Charlie is a musician who loves his female companions and takes advantage of his status as a musician to fulfill his sexual desires. Penelope knows her way around and is very confident. She has many men brought to her attention, but she doesn’t want to end up with the wrong man. Eventually, Penelope figures it out and understands that the right man will come along when it’s meant to happen. Through twists and turns in life, dating, relationships, careers and love – all in the amazing city of London, this story really intrigued and captivated me. One? reminds me of the popular TV series, Sex in the City.

Jennifer L Cahill’s clever writing style is extraordinary. I loved hearing the thoughts of each character and it really helped me to get to know them. One? is a character driven story and all of the characters are very well developed and authentic. The storyline is original, interesting and very entertaining. But, it is the characters themselves that fascinated me. The changes they go through and the personal growth they experience is truly inspiring and so relatable. Cahill’s expressive descriptive writing had me in London experiencing the city’s ambiance and feeling as if I was there as the story unfolded.

As a debut author, Jennifer L Cahill has written a thought-provoking, compelling and most entertaining story – with a bit of a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to reading her next book. Artisan Book Reviews highly recommends One? by Jennifer L Cahill.
