Sam: The Cat Without A Tail by Gloria Lintermans, is a delightful children’s picture book that presents and expounds on the subjects of diversity, acceptance and self-worth.
Sam is an adorable white Manx kitten. He is newly adopted by a lovely family and a boy named Alex. Although, the family and Alex love him, he finds that the neighborhood cats think he is different because he doesn’t have a real tail – but only a cute, fluffy, white stub. There is a Persian cat, and a couple of tabby cats that Sam plays with. Sam begins to feel bad because the other cats are always teasing him and he realizes that he is not the same as them.
But then, Aunt Martha comes for a visit. Sam soon learns that his differences make him unique and wonderful. He then regains his self-worth, confidence and happiness.
Sam: The Cat Without A Tail is a unique story that teaches children about tolerance, acceptance and self-esteem. It emphasizes the importance of including those that are different, in one way or another. It stresses the fact that we are all unique with our own special abilities and attributes and everyone should be loved and cared for.
This story is perfect for helping children to understand their feelings and why they are having them. Being different and having self-esteem can be a complicated subject to discuss with your child. This charming tale helps to explain the topic and show children what is going on and how they can overcome any feelings of low self-worth or lack of confidence. There are some very encouraging notes for parents on how they can gently help to build their child’s self-esteem and help them to truly believe in themselves. There is also some interesting information on the Manx cat in the back of the book.
Sam: The Cat Without A Tail by Gloria Lintermans is well written, fast paced and intriguing with beautiful eye-catching illustrations. I read it to my little grandchildren and they were so captivated by the pictures. They absolutely loved Sam with his very large and adorable green eyes. They became emotional towards Sam and his feelings of inadequacy. Although they are only 3 and 4, I still think they understood what the story conveyed and we had a chance to discuss some of the morals and how it could pertain to them.
Overall, Sam: The Cat Without A Tail is such an endearing, inspirational and winsome book, in every way, that children of all ages will love it. I certainly did.
