Huddled against the wall of a cold, dark basement, he never imagined life at sixty-three could become so complicated. One impulsive decision has changed his life forever, leaving him a prisoner, not only to the concrete walls that surround him, but also to a suffocating despair that threatens to consume his soul. He rages against the unfairness of life, blaming God for robbing him of all he ever cherished, leaving him with only a festering bitterness.

Now, ten-year-old Janie would suffer as well. Exploiting her presumption of his “real” identity seemed to work in his favor, but at what cost? Would he use her as a means to an end, sacrificing her innocence for his own freedom?

Meanwhile, Janie is drawn to the same dark place, though for a far different reason. A hidden object, a mysterious gift from her father, lies concealed inside. Her mother’s strict prohibition only intensifies her curiosity. She knows what is right in God’s eyes, but should she defy the rules for a chance to discover its secret?

What she finds in the basement will prove far more extraordinary than she expected–a discovery binding her fate to the desperate man trapped within its walls—a man in need of God’s redeeming love.

Review by Artisan Book Reviews

One of the most powerful endings to a Christian novel I have read. My handkerchief was soaked!

A man’s days are punctuated with memories of his wife, daughter, brother, and parents. Between each waking action and vibrant memory, insidious whispers of hopelessness plague him—battering him down into the dark place of depression and loss.

You see, Michael’s wife and daughter were tragically killed in a car accident fourteen years ago, and his life has been unraveling ever since. At sixty-three, alone in a house he can’t afford to pay the bills, he finally hits the lowest moment of his life.

On the other side of town, ten-year-old Janie mourns the accidental death of her father. She misses him and longs to enter the basement where she knows he had kept a present for her.

Two hurting souls and two different lives are about to crash into each other.

Hitting the lowest point of desperation, Michael robs a bank, and on the run dives into a stranger’s basement to hide from the police.

What happens next is a perfect opportunity for God to reveal His love.

Janie’s childlike faith and recent memory verse about entertaining angels without knowing it lead her to believe God has sent an angel to help her family. This misunderstanding creates the emotional and spiritual heart of the book.

Once I started reading, I couldn’t put this book down. I was drawn to Michael’s plight and longed to see how God would reach out to him. It was the same compulsive page-turning I experienced when I read William P. Young’s The Shack and Hannah Hurnard’s Hinds’ Feet on High Places.

Despite the outward theme of loss and despair, this is a story of hope and redemption, but most importantly, it’s about having a relationship with the Lord. It is filled with faith and love on every page. An unforgettable, moving, and heart-warming story. The Basement Angel by Lee Ann McChristian is very highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews and Marketing.

Don’t miss this Christian mystery story with a wonderful inspiring message of grace, hope & faith.
