Artisan Book Reviews & Author Spotlights:
Revenge of the RiverHome Rootabegga by Tim Wright sees the long-awaited return of Toby Baxter. Having followed The Adventures of Toby Baxter from the beginning, this fifth instalment captures the essence of the series. Blending high-stakes fantasy with a coming-of-age outlook allows it to be imaginative while resonating deeply with readers.
The story begins with Toby’s fascination with Bigfoot, tumbling down rabbit holes as he absorbs himself with the mystery. Considering that he lives in a world where elves and other mythical creatures exist, Bigfoot doesn’t feel too far-fetched now. This speculation is pushed aside when he and his friends are attacked at the Mall by Rootabeggas, disfigured carrot-like creatures that spread a foul anger-inducing stench. Rushed back to RiverHome, he discovers that the magical realm is also being infected by the devastating contagion. Refusing to give up hope, Toby must rely on his friends to overcome his own inner conflicts as he faces his most personal challenge yet.
One of my favorite aspects about this series has been the different themes throughout, whether it be romance or the daunting reality of growing up. It’s always handled in a mature and approachable manner; this latest instalment is no different, as it focuses on the sobering idea of actions having consequences. Biblical analogy is woven brilliantly throughout, which is subtle yet provides a cautionary tale on deceit and harmful distractions.
Another highlight has been the characters, particularly our protagonist, Toby, who has come a long way from when we first met him. It’s been rewarding to watch him grow and see him develop in his journey, becoming more nuanced, as he realizes that his decisions carry greater weight. This adds a more grown-up element to the story as his emotional depth gets challenged.
Revenge of the RiverHome Rootabegga by Tim Wright is a brilliant addition to a special series that will immerse you in the rich and magical world of RiverHome. I really look forward to reading these books to our future children. The anticipation is high for the next adventure.
