I Hope This Doesn’t Find You by Ann Liang
Unforgettable, snarky, and romantic,Ā I Hope This Doesn’t Find You is “Never Have I Ever ” meets “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” Ā if Lara Jean wrote hate emails instead of love letters.
Sadie Wen is perfect on paper: school captain, valedictorian, and a “pleasure to have in class.” It’s not easy, but she has a trick to keep her model-student smile plastered on her face at all times: she channels all her frustrations into her email drafts. She’dĀ neverĀ send them of course — she’d rather die than hurt anyone’s feelings — but it’s a relief to let loose on her power-hungry English teacher or a freeloading classmate taking credit for Sadie’s work.
All her most vehemently worded emails are directed at her infuriating cocaptain, Julius Gong, whose arrogance and competitive streak have irked Sadie since they were kids.Ā “You’re attention starved and self-obsessed and unbearably vain . . . I really hope your comb breaks and you run out of whatever expensive hair products you’ve been using to make your hair appear deceptively soft . . .”
Sadie doesn’t have to hold back in her emails, because nobody will ever read them . . . that is, until they’re accidentally sent out.
Overnight, Sadie’s carefully crafted, conflict-free life is turned upside down. It’s her worst nightmare — now everyone at school knows what sheĀ really thinks of them, and they’re not afraid to tell her what they really think of her either. But amidst the chaos, there’s one person growing to appreciate the “real” Sadie — Julius, the only boy she’s sworn to hate . .
I Hope This Doesn’t Find You by Ann Liang is so so cute. Very much what it says when its described as Never Have I Ever mixed with To All the Boys Ive Loved Before. Its a perfect, adorable book that made me stay up way too late to finish. It made me laugh and cry and kick my feet and squeal . It was honestly like watching a romantic comedy and drama but it’s a book so it’s more detailed, in depth, and relatable. Everyone needs to read it. I finished it in a day and now Iām buying the authors other books because itās just so good!!
We follow the story of Sadie and Julius, 2 school rivals, who often compete with each other for grades and extra school activities.
Sadie is a people pleaser and values doing her best, so she really can’t stand Julius. She secretly writes him emails she doesnāt intend to send him to get her frustrations out and boy could I feel how much she loathed him from the first chapter.
She works hard in school, extra curriculaās, at home, and in her familyās bakery. She puts everyoneās needs before her own. Everyone except for her academic rival, Julius Gong.
This book follows the events that take place after all of Sadieās hateful email drafts are sent out to the entire school. These drafts are essentially diary entries directed towards fellow classmates, and even some teachers. Once these emails are sent Sadie finds herself trying to fix things and make everyone forget what she has said about them. While she works towards this goal, she is also forced to work with her rival, Julius, by the principal of their school on varying tasks.
The slow burn and tension in this book was delicious, and the romance was SO SWEET. I absolutely loved reading about Sadie and Julius slowly realize they may not hate each other as much as they think they do.. and that maybe there is a fine line between love and hate.
In this wonderful romantic comedy and rivals to lovers teen and young adult novel, I Hope This Doesn’t Find You by Ann Liang, I really loved theĀ reference “To All the Boys I Loved Before” and the vibe, except with hate letters instead of love letters. This rivals to lovers romance was so well done by Ann Liang. You could feel the frustrations they were both feeling but also could see the small glimpse of something else between the two of them. Combine this with a vulnerable and swoon worthy MMC who made some of the sweetest gestures toward Sadie, some fun moments that made me laugh, plus a great kiss scene and this book was so easy for me to binge!
This is literally the best written academic rivals to lovers. Itās like you can truly understand how enemies fall in love. I felt connected to Sadie and how hard she worked in school and then she realized she just wants that one person to connect with and to feel wanted. I wonāt spoil it much but if you like academic rivalry to lovers. We highly really recommend this book. The authorās details in her writing was beautiful, descriptive and alive!
