An instantĀ New York TimesĀ bestseller!
āThis is an absolute, canāt-put-it-down thriller. . . . Itās truly a wild ride that had me flying through chapter after chapterāwhich I think is the perfect way to kick off your year of reading.āāReese Witherspoon (Reeseās Book ClubĀ PickĀ January 2023)
Armed with only hazy memories, a woman who long ago witnessed her friendās sudden, mysterious death, and has since spent her life trying to forget, sets out to track down answers. What she uncovers, deep in the woods, is hardly to be believed. . . .
Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, dropped dead in front of the enigmatic man named Frank whom theyād been spending time with all summer.
Seven years later, Maya lives in Boston with a loving boyfriend and is kicking the secret addiction that has allowed her to cope with what happened years ago, the gaps in her memories, and the lost time that she canāt account for. But her past comes rushing back when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires hometown to relive that fateful summerāthe influence Frank once had on her and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey.
At her motherās house, she excavates fragments of her past and notices hidden messages in her deceased Guatemalan fatherās book that didnāt stand out to her earlier. To save herself, she must understand a story written before she was born, but time keeps running out, and soon, all roads are leading back to Frankās cabin. . . .
Utterly unique and captivating,Ā The House in the PinesĀ keeps you guessing about whether we can ever fully confront the past and return home.
Rave Reviews:
Tense and exciting. It moves quickly and yet you can not stop reading. Although Reyes is a new name to me, I am looking forward to finding more books by her. Do yourself a favor, and add her to your favorites.
What a great story. Took me a bit to realize what was happening. Once I figured it out I couldn’t put it down. Very intriguing, very what next kind of read.
Awesome book with a wonderful main character and powerful story. Flips back and forth in time beautifully between chapters with strong back stories for the characters and a terrifying trail of murders. Wish it didnāt end.
Gripping and unique. A well paced mystery that keeps you turning pages! (I devoured this in less than 24 hours!) Once you’ve figured out what’s going on, before the main character even does, it’s too late for you. You’ll need to know how it ends.
This was one of the best thrillers Iāve read in years. Reyes has conjured up a story dripping with atmosphere and the allure of a classic bad romance. A must-read for fans of Gillian Flynn, Sarah Pinborough, and Jennifer Egan.
