The Island of Sunshine has so much appeal. It’s got a cute bar, a long-standing feud between the Larssons and the McClellans that any close-knit community would love, and a love of good whisky and ale. So, when Danny Larsson comes back into town to run the pub that he had asked his friend Ian McClellan to take over for him, every Scotsman on the Larsson side of the feud exhaled in relief. Even though Ian has known Danny all his life, the Danny that walks back into the bar is unrecognizable to his oldest friend. Danny’s reeling from his wife’s infidelity and the realization that he now needs to start over; and even Ian’s training for the priesthood feels inadequate to offer the support needed. When Ian finds Claire knocking on the pub’s door early the next morning, a new series of events unfold that will fully test the strength of each character. Suddenly Claire’s presence on their island of sunshine opens the door to a sinister, unfamiliar presence, while Danny and his friends now have an ominous battle on their hands. While Our Beautiful Mess is presented as a romance, it is so much more. I loved the slow build romance BK Clark built into this storyline, but I loved the suspenseful, action-packed plot just as much and maybe more. When the messages written in blood first started appearing in Claire’s rental, I could not figure out how they were happening. I loved the tension created by these messages and the way it pulled at Danny’s need to protect. This added tension makes Our Beautiful Mess extremely unique for its genre. As this aspect of the plot builds, so does the panic the reader feels until it is almost impossible to put the book down. I had to know what was going to happen to each character almost as much as I had to know if Danny and Claire were going to get together. BK Clark writes an incredible romance as well with a slow, sensual build that has a satisfying ending. I love her expressive writing style. Her descriptions, unique voice and style of narration made me feel as if I was right there on the scene as the story progressed, and as if I knew the characters well and came to feel like they were my own friends whom I really cared about. The story is meaningful, stirring, and entertaining. BK Clark has written a fabulous one-of-a-kind romantic suspense story. Her skillful writing ability and wonderful talent for storytelling clearly shines through in, Our Beautiful Mess.
