An engaging stunning storyline with an intense and gripping plot, Girl in the Ashes by Douglas Weissman is a unique book readers will never forget.

In a time of war, Paris’ inhabitants must do whatever they can to feed their families, to care for themselves and to stay sane.  Odette Lefebvre, a Parisian nurse, is no different.  However, after watching the grocer kill her mother, Odette has a different idea of how to keep those around her safe.  Working with Agnes, a family friend and neighbor, Odette tracks down dangerous men who both women feel are deserving, and she murders them.  Odette becomes a well-oiled machine and has her vigilante murderous work honed to a perfected craft—that is, until a doctor at her hospital takes an interest in Odette.  Will cruel Dr. Ilse’s attention prove to unravel the secret deadly services Odette performs to rid Paris of unsavory men?

Douglas Weissman brilliantly brings Parisian life mid 1940’s to life in his cinematic descriptions.  From the hardship of a German occupation to the daily travails of getting food at the grocers or surviving as a woman, each dynamic is painted with the deftest of brushes.  I felt as if I was walking along the Seine as I read this book, but even more, I felt so connected to Odette’s character that I couldn’t stop reading. She is intriguing, thought-provoking and such a fascinating character that readers will not soon forget.  Each written description held a perfect harmony; I loved how the exposition didn’t get so bogged down with verbiage, yet somehow painted a moving portrayal of a woman’s undertaking during the 40’s.  In a time where Jack the Ripper’s accomplishments held so much sway, I loved that a woman could seek revenge for her gender all on her own.  As a fan of historical fiction, this book felt so real and so expertly crafted; I can’t recommend it highly enough.  The characters, the plot, and the way Douglas wove each character together as if in a web was a work of art.  I can’t wait for other readers to feel the sweeping narrative, to experience the grit and grime of life during wartime, or to watch the tenuous bonds that humanity forms to protect itself. Odette’s story, thoughts and actions will grip and captivate readers as this is an intriguing and shocking twist on your typical serial killer story.

Girl in the Ashes by Douglas Weissman is a must read for any adult reader. In my opinion, even readers who love and read historical thrillers will be completely surprised reading about the many atrocities, and the abusive men who get what they have coming to them. This is a completely unique story and I fell in love with these characters and their boldness.  Be prepared for a moving, aggressive wartime drama that will remind you how strong women are and the lengths some might go to protect one another and exact revenge. Girl in the Ashes by Douglas Weissman comes very highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews.
