Masked Intent: A Modern-Day Morality Play (The Morality Plays Series) by Kimberly Greer
The Morality Plays Series – ABR’s Award Winning Series
There may be more than one mask.
From being denied by her birth parents to marrying the wrong man, Alexa Winston has learned to cope with disappointment and heartache by masking her true self from the world. Divorced and finally living on her own terms, she shrouds herself in half-truths and bravado, content to live her quiet, predictable life – until she finds the job and the man of her dreams. As she falls deeper into both, and into a world ruled by powerful players jockeying for influence and dominance at all costs, she’s forced to weigh her truths against reality. Trouble is, though she’s a master at detecting self-deception in others, she’s slow to recognize it in herself.
Masked Intent takes a taut, complex look at how we hide behind inauthenticity to guide us through interpersonal relationships. Through a series of detailed, interconnected storylines, the novel takes a timely look at our relationship with the truth and how it drives our actions and motivations. Where do you draw lines in a world where authenticity takes back seat to the power and seduction of influence?
Masked Intent is the first installment in The Morality Plays Series and ends in a cliffhanger. The story concludes in Intents + Purposes, which publishes in 2023.
Artisan Book Reviews:
In Masked Intent: A Modern-Day Morality Play, Kimberly Greer skillfully demonstrates the complexities of romance. Many of us equate masks with theatre performances quite easily. We don’t always think of masks with regard to love, and yet, masks may be even more apropos in romance than on stage
Mateo and Alexa are both reticent to commitments of any kind. And yet, the physical chemistry between them is hard to deny. When training for a shared duathlon ramps up, they begin to see more of each other, and sparks are flying. And yet, neither of them is willing to take the many masks they wear to protect themselves off. Mateo and Alexa both beg the question: is it easier to live a life of half-truths to keep things easy and neat? Or to drop the protective facades and live life out loud? As both their individual storylines and their shared storyline progress, Kimberly Greer takes her readers through a wide range of emotions and experiences that many (if not all) readers will relate to. While the romance builds (read: you will not be disappointed!), other storylines are introduced that are experiences all their own. From office politics to managerial pressures, to Alexa’s boys and their lives, each storyline is beautifully woven together.
Kimberly Greer has mastered the art of storytelling. Her characters are so multi-faceted that readers will feel them nearby as they read. While this book is centrally a romance, Kimberly’s skill really lies in each scene and in the mini vignettes she builds. For example, readers see Alexa handling a treacherous client skillfully; in her performance, readers will see a glimpse into themselves as well as see the deep well of strength she possesses. Each glimpse builds a more complete picture of the characters.
Masked Intent by Kimberly Greer offers a reading experience unlike any other. Readers will finish the last page and want to jump immediately into book two. Just a word of caution: this book will likely keep you up well past your bedtime! Masked Intent by Kimberly Greer comes highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews.
