Love, Life and Loss in High Society New York. A Comedy of (Bad) Manners FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “DEATH AT SEAWORLD,” NOW BEING DEVELOPED FOR A MAJOR NETWORK SERIES. Megan O’Malley is a working-class, aspiring journalist from Ypsilanti who moves to New York City and is unexpectedly hurled into the madness of uber-rich Manhattan, with its competitive consumption, preposterous pretensions, massive financial fiefdoms, and the over-indulged wealthy, whose hordes of help keep the silver polished, the chateaubriand perfectly cooked and the martinis exquisitely dry. Megan is soon swept off her feet by the city’s most celebrated wealthy bachelor, Rexford Bainbridge, III, better known as “Sexy Rexy.” When he proposes to her, Rex’s stunned circle of friends, a cabal of Type-A socialites, reluctantly agree to take the decidedly down-market Midwesterner under their comically pompous wings and guide her through a massive makeover. As Megan pursues her dream of journalism, she must navigate a brave new life of ridiculous opulence, relentless snobbery and stinging ridicule, mostly directed at her. When everything comes crashing down, she is shunned by the ladies who lunch. Megan must now claw her way back to respectability and financial stability, while also delivering a fitting comeuppance to her mentors-turned-tormentors. This rags-to-riches-to-rags social satire unearths the dark, hilarious underbelly of class warfare in contemporary Manhattan. David Kirby spent considerable time rubbing elbows with the social elites who comprise the world of “Upper East Bride.” As Press Secretary at the American Foundation for AIDS Research, he accompanied Elizabeth Taylor around the globe, mixing with movie stars, TV celebrities, royalty and other very rich people, most of whom were quite nice. He has written for The NY Times, Huffington Post, UPI, Discover, Glamour and others, and published four nonfiction books with St. Martin’s Press. This is his first novel. He lives in NYC.
Artisan Book Reviews
Upper East Bride by David Kirby is a fabulous read!! It’s hilarious, relatable, clever, witty and so irresistible that I stayed up half the night completely hooked and unable to put it down. I have to say it is the best book I’ve read all year!! I think it is human nature to enjoy laughing at the ridiculous antics that the neighbors get up to, and there was plenty of that here. While I thoroughly enjoyed this story, I sincerely hoped it wasn’t based on real people – but I bet it was. LOL!! The author just had too much fun skewering the characters with their own flaws.
We meet Megan O’Malley as she’s on her way to New York City to make it big in journalism. Unfortunately, the city doesn’t exactly welcome her with open arms, and she finds herself waitressing at an overpriced Italian restaurant. Here she meets Manhattan’s “prince”, Rexford Bainbridge, and two of his snarky, socialite “friends”, who attempt to demean Megan. With her Irish temper and gift for holding her own in the verbal sparring arena, Megan manages to set the women in their places and captures the attention of ‘Sexy Rexy’. What follows is a whirlwind romance, marriage, and complete collapse of her new fairy-tale world. Throughout the story, we meet the posh and not-so-posh i.e., average, people that come into Megan’s life. Like The Nanny Diaries and The Devil Wore Prada, it’s a fascinating look at what life might be like in a very small, very exclusive corner of NYC. I’ve been to NYC several times, and I can confirm that the author was spot on with the descriptions of the good, the bad, and the ugly you meet as you traipse around the various neighborhoods. However, I have made a mental note to NOT go to Brighton Beach in the future, even though I speak a little Russian. While I was in a love/hate relationship with the characters, the dialogue and characterizations were absolutely hilarious. Megan’s comebacks were exactly the kinds of things that I would love to say but would never have the nerve. The descriptions of the day-to-day running of the households were also priceless. Who knew you could fill a day with so much nothing? It’s almost impressive that being rich and elite can also be a career in itself. I heartily enjoyed this story and would love to see more of this kind of writing from Mr. Kirby. His clever wit and sharp commentary on the lives of the élite of society was just what I needed to read. Megan was the perfect heroine for this tale, and even though she was put through the ringer, her grit and resilience have really stuck with me. Artisan Book Reviews highly recommends and gives five big stars for Upper East Bride by David Kirby – a very entertaining read!
