If you could have a superpower, which one would you choose? Super strength? Super speed? The ability to talk to animals? When nine-year-old Mitch Clarke is asked this by his Aunt Evie, he knows right away-invisible flying! But what he doesn’t know is that he has actually just chosen a superpower that he will have for the next two years, and this has happened in his family for generations.

With his newfound abilities, Mitch goes flying around his school and neighborhood in Hamilton, Ontario. Soon discovering he can also shrink, he has fun using his power to explore the inside of Lego creations. However, Mitch quickly discovers that having powers means you find out about other people’s secrets and problems-like the new kid in his class who is living in a shelter. With support from his Aunt Evie, Mitch vows to use his superpower for good, and in the process learns that helping others might be the most powerful ability of all.

Artisan Book Reviews:

If You Could Have a Superpower by Deborah Duncan will be a fabulous addition to children’s bookshelves.  A heartwarming tale that gently emphasizes kindness and generosity. This superhero tale shows how boys and girls can be kind and help each other – truly making them real superheroes.

Delightful images bring this wonderful children’s story to life, they’re nice and bright and dotted throughout, wonderfully bringing the characters to life.  I particularly liked the atmosphere of the picture of the three boys in their bunk-beds.

When his aunty Evie, asks nine-year-old Mitch Clarke, what superpower he would choose if he was offered one, he doesn’t hesitate and states ‘invisible-flying.’   What he doesn’t know is that his family has a secret.  Some of them received super powers when they were young!  No sooner does Mitch announce the one he would pick, he is given it!  Very quickly, he determines he will use his power to help other people.

I like that the book is infused with tidbits of knowledge, like how hot it is in Dubai and what a Shelter is.  But what I appreciated most, are the essential teachings on empathy and generosity.  The author touches on topics such as dyslexia, death of a family member and bullying, then overlays them with sharing, caring, family love and adoption.  So, besides a thoroughly entertaining read, this book is packed with lessons on what love really is.  I loved it!

Deborah Duncan has perfectly pitched her stories and drawings for young children.  The story is imaginative and gently educational, and will entertain as well as softly reinforcing good solid morals.  Her writing style is easy-to-read and will make perfect bed-time story-telling, where either the child can read themselves or be read to.  A warm, touching story that children will love, If You Could have a Superpower by Deborah Duncan comes very highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews.
