Lisa McIntyre is a high school junior trying to survive the everyday stressors of junior year. Secretly a romantic, Lisa is also equally yearning for a relationship. Through an unexpected introduction, Lisa meets Tiegan Carpenter. Handsome, intelligent, ambitious, and brave, Tiegan has all of the qualities that Lisa has been looking for in an ideal partner. Too good to be true, Lisa can’t believe her good fortune in finding her soul mate so early in life. When college becomes the sole focus for both Lisa and Tiegan, their relationship is challenged in ways that were not expected. Tensions run high as the once-power couple faces new obstacles they never thought they would experience. Tiegan quickly starts to change before Lisa’s eyes, and Lisa begins to wonder if she ever really knew Tiegan at all. When Lisa begins to question everything she thought she knew about him, she is left with one glaring question: What will it take to be good enough for him? Poignant, powerful, and glaringly honest, the story of Lisa and Tiegan are based on true events that will make readers wonder what exactly it takes for someone to be “good enough,” if such a thing really even exists at all…

Book review:

Good Enough by Kerriann MacDonald which is based on true events, is an extremely deep look into ‘self.’  What is it that makes us doubt, or believe, that we are not good enough?  Looking at one person’s real life experience as they struggle in a toxic relationship, this book shows us there can be light at the end of the tunnel.

Anyone who thinks they are in any sort of abusive relationship, be it physical or mental, would benefit from reading this book.  Largely looking at self-esteem this story lays bare the emotional struggle that one woman goes through.  Lisa McIntyre is in love.  Nothing that happens, nothing that anyone can say will shift her perception on what love she deserves.  If someone should treat her badly, well then she probably deserves it, right?  Oh, so wrong.  But when someone is in the grips of any type of emotional dysfunction they can’t see clearly.  The lines between love and abuse become blurred.  Tiegan Carpenter is emotionally detached, unable to express or receive love himself.  When two damaged people come together, the result is rarely a happy ending.  Covering self-harm, emotional abuse and self-loathing this is an emotional tale that had me sobbing when happiness walks into Lisa’s life.  You see Lisa finally recognizes the need for help and goes to therapy.  I’m not sure if seeing the therapist was the road to recovery; I think it was more from facing the truth about herself, and finally recognizing she was worth more.  I don’t want to ruin the story by telling you the ending, but it really is beautiful.

Kerriann MacDonald has written a sweeping saga in an eloquent and easy-to-read fashion.  Straight away she draws the reader into her intensely moving story, catching at your heart strings and filling you with empathy with her beautifully descriptive prose.
