With everything that is going on in the world these days, there have been times recently that I’d have liked to have been whisked away to a fantasy world full of adventure and excitement. I’m happy to say that Spirit of a Kyrie (Sky Lands) by T.L. Rese did that beautifully! Full of strange lands, mythical creatures and the journey of a lifetime for a brave young girl named Kit, this story ticks all the boxes for fantasy lovers.
Kit and her family live a hard-scrabble existence in the desert lands of Sallarah. After a run-in with a group of White Knights, during which Kit displayed fighting skills that should have been beyond her, she decides to travel from her home and take the trials to become a Kyrie, a female knight of the highest order. Without a clear idea of what dangers and challenges await her, Kit begins her training with a group of young men, who become her new family. Through the many perilous trials that propel Kit up the ladder to become elite knights-in-training, she gains in strength and experience as both a warrior and a woman. It becomes clear that Kit’s sense of honor regarding those that she loves and the world in which she wants to live will guide her as she strives towards her ultimate goal.
Even though this book has a hefty page count, I found myself racing through the book with Kit and her companions, as they traveled from one adventure and challenge to another. When I got to the end of the book, I wanted it to keep going! The author described the landscapes and creatures of the different countries in such a vivid style that I felt as though I was there. During the warrior trials and battle scenes there was such movement and excitement that I held my breath and hoped that Kit and her friends would make it through safely. I also appreciated Kit’s internal journey, as she grew from a street urchin fighting for a scrap of food for herself to a self-assured young woman with a clear vision of her place in the wider world.
For readers who have enjoyed the Dragonriders of Pern series by the late, great Anne McCaffrey, this is the story for you!! This tale of courage, love, and taking chances, set in a beautiful and fantastical world, will stay with you long after you finish reading it! A unique read with incredible characters, enchanting peculiar settings and creatures and an amazing expressive writing style.
