The Prince Within by Daisy Rodriguez starts as a ghost story and soon moves into a gripping paranormal. I’m not into horror and found myself sitting on the edge of my seat being scared silly as I read this unique, young adult, contemporary fantasy.
The author Daisy Rodriguez wastes no time at all and quickly throws us into a haunted house scenario. The pace is fast, the story-line original and the characters memorable. Yamaries’ mother died some time ago, so when her father dies it leaves her devastated. Luckily, she has an aunt and grandparents who love her, and so she moves to North Carolina to live with them. This move is soon to become bitter-sweet, for not only is she now with people who love her, she is also surrounded by ghosts, and something else…
My heart was racing as her sweet, cookie-cooking grandma is taken to hospital. My mouth open in dismay when her adorable grandfather goes missing, leaving her only with her aunt, the one person who seems to understand what she is seeing. Is Yamaries going mad, or is she really being haunted? And then there is him… a spirit, a ghost, a demon? What can he want with her? Why is she drawn to him? I feel the ending is open for another installment and I look forward to finding out what happens next.
The Prince Within is a fast, easy-to-read novella, and I think the target market of YA Fantasy fans will really enjoy this one. The characters are very well developed, the storyline and plot are engaging and fascinating and most of all, this is one scary, exciting and captivating paranormal story.
