Speaking from a place of great familiarity with the culture, Tabibzadeh takes the reader through time to experience the feeling of these characters. Tabibzadeh- tells the tale of Parviz and Shirin in a practiced, polished manner, capturing the poetry of the ancient story and its worldview: “That evening, when the night spread its hair, covering the world in darkness, Parviz went home and recited his prayers.” Describing the sources of inspiration and material for her novel, Tabibzadeh credits “This novel is the translation of beautiful Epic verses written by Nezami the famous Persian poet in the 12th century based on the true love story that rivals the Romeo and Juliette and is sweeter than any other romance you have ever read. I got some facts from another famous Poet Ferdowsi in the 10th century also.

The author, Maryam Tabibzadeh, takes us on a cultural expedition in her incredible story, Husro & Shirin: Persian Legends in Love as the key characters travel across three cities in Iran. The sights and sounds of this bygone era come alive for the reader with descriptive details of the architecture, the terrain, and even everyday objects as the individuals traverse across this region. There within this journey lies a love story, a saga, a wishful yearning, and more.

The mighty King of the Persian Empire, Husro-Parviz, is at odds for his loyalty and love for his country contradicts his heart’s desire. He is deeply in love with a woman he couldn’t have, Shirin, the beautiful princess of Armenia. And, she loved him back, but the political fervor wasn’t on their side and she refuses to become his mistress.

Shirin’s devoted follower is the handsome artist Farhad who’d trade his life for hers. His love and loyalty are unquestionable and is tested at times knowing she loves another man. Her unrequited love for the king knows no end. He witnesses their tale of love, tragedy, and joy.

Tabibzadeh skillfully captures the poetry of this ancient tale translating the stunning verses originally composed by the renowned Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi in the 12th century into a full-length true love story. Adding to this, the monumental poet, Ferdowsi’s insightful writing in the 10th century was paramount in flushing out the essence of the story.
