After a chance meeting, an old man and a middle-aged woman chart an unconventional path forward.

When Ben Sanna, a contemplative retiree with a penchant for helping people, and Samantha Beckett, a secretive New York City hedge fund manager, meet by chance in a small Vermont town, they enter into a tenuous relationship. Over several weeks, Samantha and Ben open their pasts inch by inch, sift through their futures consciously, and come to terms with the strength and depth of their bond. A meditation on redemption told in alternating chapters of musings and scenes, Cenotaphs is about platonic love; the ways we close ourselves off in reaction to pain and what happens when we open ourselves up again; and the deep, painful legacy of loss.

 Artisan Book Reviews:

Cenotaphs by Rich Marcello is a gripping piece of fiction you won’t be able to put down.  A treasured gem that you will want to read time and time again.  Intelligent, poignant and thought-provoking, and a definite five stars!

This isn’t just a story for ‘story’s sake.’ It is a tapestry of creativity that brings a man to life with intimate expression and composition.  Not just any old man, a person who on the surface looks ordinary, but someone who is a web of past events and emotions.  Ben’s getting on, he’s seventy-five to be exact, and he’s reached a place in life where he has a measure of peace.  It is only when the beautiful, mysterious and somewhat playful Sam, enters his life that he realizes he still has unresolved issues.  She appears completely ‘altogether’ but looks can be deceiving.  The two of them have an instant attraction, a bonding, and a desire to be honest.

Besides being a fascinating story about two hurting people coming together in a loving way, this is a tale about life.  More importantly it’s about choices and connections.  It is very philosophical, delving deep into human responses and why we function the way we do.  It’s a stirring and contemplative read, a book that makes you think.  This is a novel I am sure people will read several times over their lifetime, and upon each read will take away something new.

Rich Marcello’s elegant and masterful prose marks him firmly as an authentic writer of magical realism.  There’s a rich flourish to his storytelling, deep analysis to his characters, and an undercurrent of inspiration to lift you and leave you more enriched for having read his work.  Cenotaphs by Rich Marcello is deeply moving and spellbinding, and comes very highly recommended by Artisan Book Reviews.
