Synopsis:

Wounded Marine veteran, Cluny McPherson, is ready to throw in the towel. Why are his PTSD nightmares worse now, more than ten years after the ambush outside Fallujah? He hates his growing feelings of hopelessness and doubts he’ll ever live a normal life. He loves women and kids, and he desires a loving woman in his life, one who wants a family as much as he does. But with the nightmares getting worse, the only female he dares spend an entire night with is his loyal service dog, Queen, a war vet herself. Until one day on a California beach, he meets a beautiful Brazilian woman and her young boy and everything changes. For the first time in years, there’s a chance of healing…and a chance at love.

Graciella Jefferson, SEAL widow and single mother, is wary of the man who sits for hours on the sand by the Point Dume rocks, staring at the ocean. But her nine-year-old son, Santos, is increasingly curious about the dog that wears a vest and stays next to the tall, dark-haired man in the baseball cap. When she finds out Cluny was saved in Iraq by her late husband, a friendship begins between them that quickly heats up into something much more. But Graciella has been burned before. Can she lower the walls around her heart and learn how trust again?

Review:

Love of a Marine by Patty Campbell is an endearing heartwarming story about family, romance and healing from tragedies and the torrents of war. In it we have Cluny McPherson, a wounded marine veteran that served in the war and was part of the ambush just outside Fallujah. He has PTSD and has suffered flashbacks and feelings of despair. His uncertainty grows deeper every day that he will never be normal again. He relies on his loyal dog, Queen, for comfort and support. He would love to have a woman and a family, but doubts that will ever happen because of his recurring nightmares and ongoing distress. Until, one day he meets a beautiful Brazilian woman, Graciella Jefferson, and her curious son at the beach. Graciella soon finds out that her husband, whom was also in the war, but died, saved Cluny’s life in Iraq. A friendship soon strikes up, and love could be in the air, but things are quite complicated.

Author, Patty Campbell has constructed a beautiful tale that tells of the hardships and effects of war for both the warriors of the battles and the devastated women left behind. Her characters are believable and realistic with many flaws and strengths causing the reader to fully connect with them. They are fully fleshed out and developed nicely, with complete back stories. There is a mix of interesting characters that fill this book. Unexpected people and developments come about. It is very interesting and entertaining. The dialog between them is more than impressive and written very well. The descriptive writing had me on the scene watching on as the story unfolded. The storyline and plot is unique with many surprises and turns of events. It flows pleasantly and is easy to read and very understandable. It is an original work of fiction and I enjoyed it immensely. I was instantly drawn into this storyline from the very first chapter, all the way to the conclusion, which had a nice twist. It is a real page turner and one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I learned a lot about what our soldiers go through during and after they return from war. Patty Campbell writes extremely well and certainly understands what our soldiers must endure. I commend her for writing this book and giving the proceeds to help returning warriors and their families with their financial and medical needs.

Readers will revel in Love of a Marine, as I did. It is engaging, touching and very surprising along the way. And, the romance in this story will keep readers fully captivated and excited. Artisan Book Reviews highly recommends it to all readers that would love to read about and know more about what our brave men and women overseas go through, before and after service.
