They were all stars in their hometowns. Then they were drafted to play minor league ball, thinking it would be an easy ride to playing in the big time. Little did they know that they’d be vying for a spot with every other talented kid who aspired to play professional baseball. Young, inexperienced, immature, and without the support of their families and friends, they’re often faced with split-second decisions. Not always on the baseball diamond.

Empty Seats by Wanda Adams Fischer is a fine coming of age story about three young talented baseball players. Each of them are pitchers hoping for the major leagues. While life happens to and around them, they each have their own issues in life and the story revolves around their lives. For baseball lovers, like me, this book hits a home run.

The characters are made up of three high school pitchers that have been drafted to the minor leagues. They are all well developed with interesting personalities, differing backgrounds and lives.

The author has taken the time and expertise to create these characters to evoke emotion and familiarity. The scenarios and dialogue are very realistic and relatable.

Poignant and touching, this story is devoted to the respect and love for baseball. However, even if you are not a fan of baseball, this book will touch you to the core and remind you of life’s with its up’s and down’s, especially as a young person.
